Special Issue on "AI in Knowledge Management"

of Elsevier's "Knowledge-based Systems" Journal

Since its emergence a few years ago, the field of Knowledge Management (KM) has rapidly gained popularity both in academia and in industry. While there still exists multiple (sometimes conflicting) interpretations of what exactly Knowledge Management entails, it is generally agreed that the definition, for practical purposes, encompasses processes and techniques for the creation, collection, indexing, organisation, distribution, access to and evaluation of institutional knowledge for reuse.

To establish a seamless knowledge management process that encompasses all these aspects, one must consider cultural and human resource issues as well as intelligent systems that faciliate knowledge workers to perform their daily tasks. With regard to such systems, current practice relies almost exclusively on search engines and database techniques, thus overlooking the potential benefits that AI techniques might deliver for core knowledge management activities like knowledge discovery, indexing, organisation, and knowledge fusion. This special edition is intended to redress this apparent imbalance by emphasising the significance of knowledge processing in the corporate management of knowledge.

In order to address the above priorities, KBS aims to publish a special issue in the year 2000 on AI in KM. Papers that address the use of AI techniques in any KM processes are now invited. Papers and short communications in the following areas are especially welcome:

Both theoretical and application papers are welcome. In all papers, author(s) must also specifically identify the relevance of their technique(s) to any aspect(s) of Knowledge Management. Survey papers on intelligent systems for KM will also be considered. Application papers, due to their very nature, may contain commercial-in-confidence information. Authors are, therefore, advised to obtain clearance from their organisation (or their client) prior to the submission of such papers.

Intending author(s) should consult the journal's submission guidelines (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/knosys), which appear on the inside cover of every KBS issue.
